Katja Burkhart (presenter): Wo waren die Tokio Hotel-Zwillinge eigentlich so lange und warum haben sie überhaupt fluchtartig Deutschland verlassen? Zwei Jahre herrschte nahezu absolute Funkstille. Bill und Tom Kaulitz hatten sich komplett zurückgezogen. Jetzt haben die 23-Jährigen Zwillinge über ihre Auszeit, das angebliche Band-Aus und natürlich über ihre erste Woche am DSDS-Jury-Pult gesprochen. Anne T. und Anne H. berichten.
Where have Tokio Hotel’s twins actually been for so long and why did they even leave Germany in such a hurry? There has been almost total silence for two years. Bill and Tom Kaulitz completely withdrew themselves. Now the 23-years-old twins talked about their hiatus, the alleged end of the band and of course about their first week at the DSDS judges’ desk. Anne T. and Anne H. are reporting.

Voice-over: Zwei Jahre waren sie weg. Quasi von der Bildfläche verschwunden. Wenig hat man gehört von Bill und Tom aus ihrem freiwilligen Exil in LA.
They’ve been gone for two years. [They] virtually vanished into thin air. Only little was heard about Bill and Tom from their voluntary exile in LA.

Bill: Wir haben uns eigentlich so’n bisschen zurückgezogen die letzten zwei Jahre. Ganz bewusst. Wir haben ja konsequent keine Interviews gegeben und keine, erm… nichts gemacht. Haben uns irgendwie privat zurückgezogen, aber auch musikalisch um neue Sachen zu machen.
For the past two years we‘ve actually withdrawn ourselves for a bit. Deliberately. After all we consistently didn’t give any interviews and no, erm… didn’t do anything. We somehow retreated privately but also musically to do new stuff.

Voice-over: Bill und Tom haben sich ganz schön verändert. Die sahen doch mal so aus. Aus den Teenies sind junge Männer geworden. Heute trägt Bill mal die Haare hoch, beim nächsten Interview dicke Brille und Cappy.
Bill and Tom changed quite a bit. After all they used to look like this. The teens became young men. Today Bill wears his hair styled up, [and] for the next interview [he wears] big glasses and a cap.

Bill: Ich mach‘ halt nicht immer ‘n bestimmtes Styling so und ich kreier‘ das auch nicht. Also, eigentlich bei mir passiert das immer so ganz automatisch und natürlich.
I just never wear, like, a certain styling and I also don’t create it. Meaning, it actually happens entirely automatically and naturally with me.

Voice-over: Lange hat man gerätselt: „Was ist aus den Brüdern geworden?“ 2010, auf dem Höhepunkt ihres Erfolgs, zog sich die Band plötzlich zurück. Die vier Magdeburger Jungs hatten genug vom Starrummel.
For a long time one wondered “What became of the brothers?” The band suddenly withdrew at the peak of their success in 2010. The four guys from Magdeburg had enough of the celebrity hype.

Bill: Viele Leute sind ja immer so und denken dann so „Ah, die sind ja erst 23. Wie können die denn irgendwie, erm, da zwei Jahre sich zurückziehen?“ Erm…
Many people are always like this and then think “Ah, they’re only 23. How can they somehow, erm, withdraw themselves for two years?” Erm…
Tom: Aber wir haben ja mit 15 angefangen.
However, after all we’ve started out aged 15.
Bill: Aber wir haben ja mit 15 angefangen und zwei Jahre ist eigentlich… Das geht ja so schnell rum.

Voice-over: Während ihrer Pause gab es immer wieder Gerüchte um eine Magersucht bei Bill. Sogar Drogen und Alkoholvorwürfe. Immer wieder heißt es Tokio Hotel habe sich längst aufgelöst, aber „Alles Unsinn.“ sagen die Brüder.
During their break rumours about anorexia in Bill kept appearing. Even accusations of drugs and alcohol [use]. Time and again it’s reported that Tokio Hotel broke up a long time ago but “All of that is rubbish.” the brothers say.

Tom: Nee, wir sind nicht nur noch zu zweit! Nee, nee. Nein. Nee, nee, nee, nee. Nee, nee, wir sind nur zu zweit in der Jury, aber wir haben… Nee, nee, Georg und Gustav sind auch dabei. Die, die sind in Deutschland wohnen geblieben, aber die sind dabei wieder. Die kommen nach LA, wir sind zwischendurch in Deutschland. Ja, und wir produzieren an der nächsten Platte.
Nope, there’s not just only the two of us left! Nope, Nope. No. Nope, nope, nope, nope. Nope, nope, it’s only the two of us on the judging panel but we’ve got… Nope, nope, Georg and Gustav are also around. They, they continued living in Germany but they’re around again. They come over to LA, [and] we’re in Germany from time to time. Yes, and we’re [working on] producing the next record.

Voice-over: Zurückgezogen haben sich die Zwillinge angeblich in diese Villa in LA. Ziemlich schick, aber darum geht es gar nicht in erster Linie.
Allegedly the twins retreated to this villa in LA. Rather posh but not what it’s about first and foremost.

Tom: Wir wollten einfach mal irgend ‘ne Pause haben, was anderes machen.“ Und vor allem auch mal irgendwie so’n Zuhause-Gefühl haben irgendwie. Dass man ‘n Haus hat wo man nach Hause kommt und sagt „Hier wohnen wir jetzt.“, weil das hatte man vorher immer gar nicht. Wir waren immer unterwegs.
We just wanted to have a break, [and] do something different.” And above all to have some kind of an at-home feeling for once. To have a house where you get home to and say “Here is where we’re living now.” because one just never had that before. We’ve always been on the road.

Voice-over: Für DSDS sind sie wieder in die Heimat zurückgekommen. Es ist eine Art Neuanfang für Bill und Tom.
They came back to their home country for DSDS. It’s a fresh start of sorts for Bill and Tom.

Tom: Bei mir war einfach im Endeffekt der Drang so groß, erm, einfach auch die Jugend musikalisch zu fördern, dass ich gesagt hab’, ich mach’ das kostenlos. Bill hat ’n Arsch voll Geld gekriegt und erm, das ist die Wahrheit.
Bottom line is that for me the urge to also just nurture young people musically became so strong that I said I’d do it for free. Bill got sh*tloads of money and erm, that’s the truth.
*Bill laughing*

Voice-over: Nicht ganz ernst gemeint, aber sie freuen sich jetzt zur DSDS-Familie zu gehören. Dafür haben sie gerne ihre Auszeit beendet.
[He] wasn’t all that serious but they’re happy now to be a part of the DSDS family. They gladly ended their hiatus for that.
